Want to know how you can change the way you live by being eco-conscious and having a sustainable lifestyle? Read on!

As Earth Day is celebrated on the 22nd of April, people around the world are made to rethink whether they are putting in the right efforts to sustain our environment or not. A lot of enterprises, both small and large-scale, are trying every marketing gimmick to promote their brands by labelling their products as ‘environment-friendly’ for a better profit. Because of this practice, it becomes harder for eco-conscious people to adhere to sustainable ways of living in order to protect their environment.

To help you become more compassionate towards our planet, here are 10 little ways with which you can become a better human and achieve a sustainable lifestyle:

  1. Use old newspapers: You can replace the idea of using plastic bags by creating your own Tote bags with old newspapers. In this way, you will be refraining from using plastic that can seriously harm our ecosystem and also put that pile of papers to good use!

2. Save up on water:

You can save water while brushing your teeth and bathing by filling your containers with water in advance instead of going for running taps and showers. Also, instead of pouring the water obtained from your air conditioners or washing your vegetables can be used to water the plants. With small efforts like these, you can definitely bring a change!

3. Give up on plastic items: You can switch your plastic straws with reusable ones made with metal, your plastic toothbrushes and combs with ones made out of bamboo and your cutlery with materials like glass, steel and aluminium. Being mindful of your daily items can truly make a huge difference.

4. Say yes to slow, sustainable fashion: Sustainable and ethical fashion is an approach towards sourcing, manufacturing and designing clothes that maximises the benefits to the fashion industry and society at large, while at the same time minimising its impact on the environment. You can also opt for Thrifting, which means utilising second-hand or slightly defective clothes that can be reused after proper sanitisation.

5. Powering it off: We all know about this one but are still not habitual of incorporating it in our daily lives. Whenever we are not using our electronic devices and appliances that require an electric connection, we should make sure to switch them off when they are not in use or required for the time being.

6. Go vegan/vegetarian: You can boycott products and food items that involve killing animals in any form by turning vegetarian or vegan. Recent studies suggest that people who are now refraining from eating non-vegetarian food are experiencing lesser mental and physical health problems than their counterparts.

7. Travel wisely: You can opt for cycling or walking on foot instead of taking out your car or two-wheeler to travel to nearby places. In case you have to travel to a far-off location, you can avail of public transportation if it is not very necessary for you to travel privately. This can help you reduce air pollution to a great extent.

8. Invest in organic products: You may be lured to buy readily available products from the market with good packaging, but we often tend to forget the amount of chemical and preservatives these products are packed with. Instead, try to go for products that are silicone and paraben-free that does not involve any kind of harm to the environment.

9. Try upcycling: Using old stuff at home to create a completely new item out of it is known as upcycling. For example, you can use your old clothes to curate them together and make a beautiful floor mat for your drawing room. Wonderful, isn’t it?

10. Have a smaller family: Larger the population, the more will be the demands for food, water, land and fossil fuels that can push other species to extinction. with. We can achieve an ecologically sustainable population with a smaller family and promote human rights, help decrease poverty and overcrowding, raise our standard of living and allow plants, animals and ecosystems to thrive.

While it is not easy for anyone to change the world on an individual level, few sustainable habits like these in your daily lifestyle can definitely make a huge impact on the well-being of our lives and the world we live in.
