Depression is not just being sad. People with depression have much more complex thoughts than can be attributed to some recent, upsetting life-event.
While depression is a serious mental health concern that often lasts for a long period of time, many people use the term ‘depressed’ when sad or upset. Being sad is a personal emotion that can be traced back to some recent life event whereas being depressed is an issue related to mental health that exists for a prolonged period of time and is often accompanied by feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest in life activities. Depression can be serious and can lead to self-destructive behaviour, therefore it is important to know how to look out for our dear ones who might be suffering from depression. Let us look at some common thoughts in people with depression:
People suffering from depression lose their interest in daily activities and the things that once brought them happiness, fail to make them happy anymore. They think that there is no hope of happiness in their life.
2. Hopelessness
They do not look forward to a happy or a better future and start thinking that their life will be a deep, dark abyss with no ray of light to save them from their own thoughts or actions.
3. They are a failure
People suffering from depression attribute every failure to their inability to work properly. They think that they are the reason behind every mistake and that the people related to them also suffer because of their inability to finish their tasks properly.
4. Tiredness
They feel tired all the time and there is always a lack of energy or enthusiasm. Though they might be doing well physically, they think that they are tired and are unable to do a given task. This, in turn, could lead to a loss in appetite resulting in weight loss and dependence on others for daily chores.
5. They are in this due to choice
Due to societal reactions, many people suffering from depression often start thinking that they are depressed by choice. They think that depression is a conscious choice and nothing can be done about it if they cannot have a positive attitude. Due to this, they can be apprehensive about talking about their feelings to others and draw a wall around themselves.
6. They are a burden on others
While talking about their feelings might be difficult, those people who do talk about what they think and feel start thinking that they are a burden on their loved ones. This often leads them to think that the lives of their family members will be much better without them and they should rid their family and friends of their presence.
7. Their situation won’t get better
We have already talked about the feeling of hopelessness in people suffering from depression, but this hopelessness is not just limited to their life goals. Some people who have been in depression for a long period of time might also think that no amount of treatment can help them with their situation and they are in it for life.
It is our responsibility to help the people around us who might have such thoughts. Depression can be treated and a person can have a productive life with proper help and support.
Let us all pledge to be aware and look out for symptoms and end the stigma related to mental health. Let us acknowledge their pain, issues, and trauma and let them know that it’s okay to not be okay. Let us be there for them.
