Every relationship has its own ups and downs but if you feel as though your’s only has downs, it’s time to do something about it.

Every relationship you’re in is different. Whether it’s a personal relationship, friendship, or even a business relationship, there is a certain amount of respect that you as an individual should receive. You should feel secure with whomever you choose to enter a relationship with. When you’re in a healthy relationship, everything happens to just work out, and fall into place, even when plans go haywire.

You and your partner should be open to discussion, talking about issues, addressing problems, and finding a solution. When you’re in a toxic relationship, you constantly feel tired without knowing why.

But the worst part is, when you’re in a toxic relationship, you can’t tell the signs yourself.

Here are 9 signs to show that you are in a toxic relationship:

1. Lack of support- Your partner does not support any decision you take. Be it a career choice or even clothes, your partner is constantly belittling you and making you feel incompetent. It can be as simple as constantly saying, “Are you sure you’re cut out for that.”

2. Toxic Communication- If there is a constant passive-aggressive conversation in your relationship or constant underlying hostility in your communication, you know something is wrong. Instead of treating each other nicely, you’re constantly criticizing each other, and even stop talking.

3. Controlling behavior- Controlling behavior can even be in subtle forms such as constantly asking you where you are. It can even be, “where are you now? I want to meet you.” But if this happens every time you’re out with someone else, you know something is wrong. Control can also be in terms of what you eat, what you wear, and who you talk to. In worst-case scenarios, control is also a form of abuse.

4. Resentment- Resentment works both ways in a relationship. If you hold grudges and let them fester away, it might create a lack of intimacy in your relationship. So if you have constant thoughts like: “because of my partner I could not do this.” Then you know you have feelings of resentment.

5. Constant Stress- Certain tensions run in a relationship, and no relationship is always easy breezy. But if you find yourself in a relationship where you’re constantly afraid of your partner or get stressed out by the kind of reactions you get in a relationship, that is a clear indicator of a toxic relationship.

6. Ignoring your needs- Of course, sometimes you need to make a compromise on what you want and go along with what your partner wants. But what should not be a constant routine? If you find yourself constantly giving in to your partner’s needs and ignoring yours, then you should know that’s not right. Your comfort level and your likes matter.

7. Dishonesty- Everyone lies in relationships, but most of the time they are little white lies you take on, to not hurt your partner’s feelings. But if you find yourself lying about what you’re doing, where you’re going and who you’re meeting constantly when you know that the relationship is toxic.

8. Lack of self-care- When you’re in a toxic relationship. You stop taking care of yourself and your needs. You forget about your usual self-care habits, withdraw from your hobbies and neglect your health.

9. Walking on eggshells- You avoid bringing up topics because you are afraid that you will trigger extreme reactions, so instead you choose to ignore the problem or take on the burden yourself.

Everyone deserves a healthy relationship. If you feel like your relationship is taking a turn for the worst, it’s best to get out before things go out of hand. Remember you are not alone. You have the support of your friends and loved ones, so reach out when you feel the need to.
