All You Need to Know About India’s Sneha Dubey, the Young Diplomat’s UN Speech
Meet Sneha Dubey, a 2012 batch IFS officer who was the first secretary for India at the UN Conference in New York.
Ever since the partition in 1947, the relations between India and Pakistan have been sour, despite repeated attempts to mend them. Kashmir has always been the bone of contention between both countries, and the issue was brought up in United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held in New York last month.
When Pakistan’s PM Imran Khan in his address spoke about India’s decision to abrogate Article 370 and the death of a pro-Pakistan separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, he received a fiery response from Sneha Dubey, a 2012 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Officer.
She said in her response that Pakistan is a country where terrorists enjoy free pass, is an “arsonist,” disguising itself as a “fire-fighter”. Talking about the Kashmir issue, Dubey reiterated that the entire union territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh “were, are and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India”. She even asked Pakistan to immediately vacate the areas under its illegal occupation.
Her speech won her global praise, and the Indians all over the world were proud of her. Sneha Dubey cleared the UPSC exam in her first attempt in 2011, a dream she had been nurturing ever since she was 12 years old. She did her schooling in Goa and attended Fergusson College in Pune for her bachelor’s. She completed her post-graduation in geography and M. Phil from Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi.
Dubey’s father works at a multinational company, and her mother is a teacher. She has an interest in global affairs and loves traveling. She has worked as an undersecretary in the Ministry of External Affairs and was posted as a third secretary in the Indian Embassy in Madrid, Spain in 2014. She is the first member of her family to join a government office.
Indians expressed their happiness on social media, hailing her speech and the apt response she gave to PM Imran Khan. IFS is anyway one of the most respected government positions in the country, and with her speech, Ms. Dubey inspired hundreds of people in India to follow in her footsteps.
Indian women never fail to make us proud. A few months back, Women International Master, Vantika Agrawal, won the national women’s online chess title. Read this blog to know about her. You can also read our other blogs on the website.
