Managing your emotions can be a tricky thing to do. While it can seem like the obvious thing to do when you are facing extreme feelings for something, it is important to know the art of handling them well. Read on:

Just like you wouldn’t want to start a new diet if you are already deficient in certain vitamins and other nutrients required for your body, you also wouldn’t want to start meditating if you aren’t getting adequate sleep.

In fact, when you try to meditate when you haven’t been sleeping well, it’s highly likely that you end up dozing off because your body is lacking the energy to keep itself going- this can be true of any other stress prevention exercises such as exercising or getting a massage as well.

Similarly, there are many forms self-care can take. Your sleep schedule, your exercise routine or your meditation practice are all viable examples of how you can treat yourself to some bettering which inevitably helps recharge your energy levels so you’re ready to face even the most chaotic day with a spring in your step and a smile on your face.

Here are 5 tips for balancing your emotions in order to have a better sense of self-management:

1. Changing your perception- If you’re stuck in the middle of intense emotions, change your viewpoint. Remind yourself that what is happening isn’t about you and it has nothing to do with how worthy you are. Stop swinging between pain and pleasure. Steer through emotions from a place of awareness.

As soon as you notice yourself losing your emotional centre, take some time for yourself- mentally step back from the situation and consider a new, empathetic perspective: what if this happened to someone else instead of me? How would I view it? Now, after taking some time away or consciously choosing not to get emotionally worked up over a particular issue, re-engaging with your business should be easier!

2. Deep breathing- Don’t overlook the power of being present. Ease your mind during stressful times by consciously focusing on each breath, one rise and fall at a time. Observe your breathing, labelling each inhales or exhale as “one” in order to remain calm and collected. If possible, find a quiet place in which you can close your eyes and relax.

If that’s not an option for you at this very moment, take some time to sit down and clear your mind of any other thoughts — regardless of where you go, practice deep breathing from within where you feel most centred so it becomes second nature to reactivate when needed.

3. Take a break- One great way to get past your emotions and simply just not feel overwhelmed is by physically changing your physical situation. When you’re feeling lost, a good way to snap out of negative thought patterns or build yourself back up after feeling overwhelmed and burned out is by simply walking away from what’s causing you undesirable feelings.

Simply excuse yourself, take a 5-minute break, change the scenery of your surroundings while at the same time making sure to shift your perspective because this always helps to make you feel like things are in fact not as bad as they may seem. With that in mind, this leaves us with one final point — know when enough is enough! Look within. Make an effort each and every day to accept where you are currently at with life & where it may be leading you towards in the future!

4. Be grateful for everything- Being grateful is a way to achieve happiness. The positive emotional state that gratitude can bring about has the power to affect your overall wellbeing. If you are having a bad day and nothing seems to be making you feel better, it may be best to reflect on something that you received or happened in your past that brought about feelings of thankfulness, no matter how small it may seem.

If you can, try maintaining a journal where you can pen down everything that you are grateful for on a regular basis- this activity will help you feel that you mean the gratitude that you are feeling inside.

5. Reflect every day- Take the time to reflect during your last moments of the day on the good things that have transpired throughout it. It’s important to make a distinction between learning from failures and failures themselves by viewing challenges as opportunities for growth. Reflect on how you feel emotionally, physically, and personally as you move toward reaching your goals both big and small.

You can start by noting down what goals you have accomplished throughout the last twenty-four hours and which ones you could have done better in order to ensure you slightly revise your goal charts from that point onwards. Reflect upon the emotions or thoughts you had throughout the day and decide if this was due to an error or just an opportunity for insight.

Conclusion-

While emotions can be reliable friends, they can also be your worst enemies when they become uncontrollable. Any emotion- even elation, joy, or others you’d typically view as positive- can intensify until it’s difficult to control. But with a little practice, you can manage yourself better.
