Songs like — “Raindrops are falling on my head, and all I feel are regrets…. And it’s falling!” “Oh, the rainy days and Mondays always make me feel down” The list goes on people! Be it the lyricist or even the Gym guys, everyone feels low during monsoon. It is often known as Monsoon depression, but the scientific name(Yes, there’s science involved here!) is SAD — Seasonal Affective Disorder. Now you know why we call people “Sad”? It is not your imagination that is building up a tiny dot to a huge rock. Blame the weather. Out of 100, almost 45 people suffer monsoon depression. The downpour often wears you down too. You don’t like leaving your bed, turning on the light, or even moving around. This is common, but how to defeat it? Don’t let the dull weather dull your spark! Change in mood and feeling susceptible is something you have to deal with. How about beating the monsoon blues and letting the serotonin level up! Here are quick ways to feel better in dark days and lighten up your energy!
1. MOVE!
No matter how “statue” you want to be, No matter how weary or tired you are — MOVE. Make those awesome moves. Plugin your earphones and dance. Do aerobics. Join the gym. Just groove to the beat of life. Kick away the depression and tell your serotonin level to rush already. Light your mood up by regular exercises. Sweating beats away the monsoon blues. Being stagnant invites emotions like a lot of anger and irritation, feeling of left out and loneliness hamper your work productivity too.
2. STEP OUT
Sunlight, or as we say — Vitamin D is a vital part to uplift your spirit. Famous psychologist Evans says that he always encourages his clients to make sure they walk outside in spite of rains and cold weather. He says that although you feel to curl up on your couch and avoid sunlight, step out. Exposure to sunlight does more than just provide healthy bones. It helps us to regulate our body’s circadian rhythm and also uplifts our mood to peak level.
3. CONNECT
When you don’t want to face yourself, call up your best friends. DM your cousins. Gather your BFF gang and talk to them. Start connecting with your long lost friends. Tell your best friend about your life. Ask him about this. A cup of coffee and your tribe can heal you in many ways that you can think of.
4. UNLEASH THE CHEF WITHIN YOU
Monsoon means cravings. It’s not just you who craves for fries and pizzas. It’s us too. But you can’t risk your health. So, feast your taste buds by trying out new recipes at your home. Cold weather and warm self-made healthy food cures your taste buds and keeps you fit. So unleash the chef within you and go treat yourself with a healthy snack.
5. BE THE SLAYER
Often we feel low during the rainy season because we don’t dress up well at our home. We usually have this idea cultivated in our head that we should dress up well only when we are stepping out. So, walk ahead, see your wardrobe, pick your favorite dress, wear your elegant perfume, and do your hair. A tint of lipstick or gel on hair would do wonders for you. Dress up for yourself people!
6. READ, OBSERVE, WATCH — REPEAT
Twenty minutes of reading a day changes your perception towards life. Pick up motivational books and have a good read. Let that sink in. Observe changes within you after implementing the powerful mantras of these books. Binge on your favourite shows. Listen to podcasts and tune into your favourite rhythm of the music.
7. CAPTURE THE MOMENTS
A systematic rainfall pouring down beautifully and bringing life into existence — what a perfect moment to capture this beauty. Go pick up your camera, witness the clouds downpour, witness the greener bloom into its fullest colour. Witness and capture it.
Monsoon depression affects you, agreed. But you can beat it down too! Gear up your monsoon mood and let it light up freshness to you like it does to nature. Rainfall is beautiful in many ways. It is mesmerizing weather. It is a season of opportunities, of self-discovery and of self-care! Begin blooming from within.
Take care and bid adieu to SAD by being HAPPY!
