Public speaking is scary no matter who you are. It would surprise you to know of the number of famous people who are scared of audiences. Adel, the world-renowned singer has admitted that she’s petrified of crowds, yet you would have never been able to guess that she was. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook himself addressed his issues about public speaking, he now speaks in front of large crowds daily. You’re essentially putting yourself out there in front of a large or small audience made up of strangers. This is extremely difficult to do, but the good thing is, there are simple ways for you to get over your fear and charm your audience. The key to public speaking is, just getting over your fear.
Here are our tips on how to improve your public speaking skills:
1. Make Eye Contact
It can be difficult to maintain eye contact with so many people. That’s why you should pick one person in a crowded room and maintain eye contact with them. This will help ease your tension and it’ll be as though you are having a conversation with them. Don’t look over the audience’s heads.
2. Do a bit of research
Know the type of audience you will be addressing beforehand. Try and understand their issues and concerns, or the reason behind which they have come to hear you speak. If you can build a connection with your audience, it will help the conversation flow.
Being energetic and keeping your audience engaged is super important. The crowd can sense the type of energy you exude and pick up on it, so you should always be positive and energetic while you address the crowd.
4. Speak beyond your presentation and never read off of a paper
If you are presenting a topic, your PowerPoint or slides should be supporting tools, and your speech should be the main tool. Make it a point to speak beyond your presentation otherwise, your audience is bound to get bored. Anyone can read words off a slide. If you have a speech prepared, don’t read directly off of the paper, audiences don’t like that. So, it’s your job to make sure you do more than that.
5. Let your personality come through
Be yourself, don’t try and change yourself as per what you think the audience wants. You will establish credibility if your personality shines through, which will help you gain your audience’s trust. Also, don’t forget to inject funny anecdotes and stories. People take those with a personal touch.
These are some easy tips that can help you become a pro professional speaker. Always remember that practise does make you perfect. As you speak more, your confidence will grow and your mistakes will reduce. Trust yourself, and it will take you a long way! If Beyoncé can do it, so can you!
