It’s Time We Be Practical and Realise that Resolutions Seldom Work!

We all set goals for ourselves at the end of the year, in hopes of seeing a change, but little do we know why resolutions fail.

Every new year signifies the beginning of a new chapter in someone’s life. While the end of the previous year signifies the end of one chapter, it also leads to a lot of introspection and retrospection. With this internal self-reflection, people tend to analyze what went wrong in the year along with the mistakes they made. With that, you make some decisions before the new year starts. These decisions to change are also known as resolutions. As the year new year begins you make these resolutions to change, but by the end of the first month itself may forget to follow through with their resolutions.

Studies have shown that 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail and many people over the years write about new approaches that they need to follow to achieve big goals. Sometimes this may include viewing it differently, naming it differently, and even approaching it differently. Only about 12% of those who take up New Year’s resolutions end up following through with them. This means that almost 156 million people give up on their resolutions before the year is over.

One of the main reasons that resolutions fail is because one does not realize that it takes time to make changes. Slow and steady changes are not seen immediately but are more effective than wanting some immediately. A lot of individuals tend to follow the ‘I want it all and I want it now’ thought process that makes it difficult to stick to a resolution. Setting small yet practical goals is the way to go. If it’s your goal to lose weight this year, then set up a reasonable plan for yourself, like cutting down on junk food instead of following a crash diet. We tend to focus on the change itself, rather than the actions that help produce the change. Try not to think too much, and focus on the actions that produce the change instead of the change itself.

A lot of people also do not believe in themselves. New Year’s resolutions are tried, tested, and sometimes even failed. So, if you are an individual who has tried to set goals for the previous years and failed at keeping them, you are not going to believe that you will stick to these. There’s a voice of doubt that will keep nagging you, and you need to resist that voice. The only way you can do that is by believing in yourself and the fact that you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

There’s a lot of thought that goes into the process of developing a New Year’s resolution. But the problem is, it stops at the thought. Too much thinking and not enough doing anything goes into the process of developing a New Year resolution. If you put what you read
and what you think into practice, you will be on the fast track to success.

Many people don’t enjoy the process of change. The goal is viewed as stress or something that needs to be checked off in a to-do list. The whole point of a New Year’s resolution is to reduce the stress in your life and not add on to it. There is no fun in doing something you hate consistently. So, change the way you look at a resolution. We need to keep in mind: that if a change was quick and easy, we wouldn’t need to set resolutions to get it done.

While making resolutions may be a ritual that we follow, we must stick to them. There is a reason behind which we decided to make these changes, so we owe it to ourselves to follow through. We may just need to change the way we approach the whole ordeal. Be patient, be kind to yourself and accept that change is a slow but rewarding process. Have a friend keep track of your process and promise yourself that you will stick to your goals this year. If you believe it, you can do it!
