If you are looking for a new series to binge-watch, then we have got your back. Warning — you will love the show, no matter your age. Watch at your risk!
“ One Day at a Time “ is a family-friendly American sitcom revolving around a Cuban-American family. The family is a bit unconventional; they challenge the social norms, but despite differences within their household, they stand united. If you are looking for a show that gives you a high dose of fun, entertainment, and laughter while teaching you important things about life and society, then search no more — “One Day at a Time” checks all the boxes.
Feminism, alcoholism, single parenting, homosexuality, sexual identity, PTSD, depression, racism, and drug addiction — the show talks about all these issues. The family is quirky, and there is only one way to write a blog without spoiling the show for you — by talking about the characters!
- Penelope
Penelope, the protagonist of the show, is a war veteran who is trying to adjust to a civilian life after being affected by war. She has recently separated from her alcoholic husband, who she still loves but had to stay away from because he was getting unsafe to live with. Penelope is that overprotective progressive mother that you all dream of, and the super responsible, beautiful daughter that you aim to be. She follows her dreams and is an independent, lovely, fun, and not-just-your-next-door neighbor. Or wait, maybe she is!
2. Lydia
Lydia — Penelope’s mother, is an ex-performer who fled Cuba as a child after Castro seized power. She is not so progressive and is devoted to her homeland and religion. Despite her beliefs, she accepts and encourages her granddaughter to follow her dreams and to be with the person she wants to be with (though throughout the show, she is shown to be favoring her grandson over her granddaughter). She is the backbone of the family — supporting and inspiring them through tough times. By the way, she is not a traditional grandmother. Watch the show to see how. You will be dying with laughter when she is in the scene!
3. Elena
Elena is the smart, intelligent, post-modern, feminist, activist daughter of the family. She knows about society and is determined to make the world a better place. (She definitely reminds me of Zia).
During the show, she discovers that she is a lesbian and gets in an adorable relationship with Syd, a non-binary person.
4. Alex -
Alex is Penelope’s son and Lydia’s darling grandson. If you are all about fashion and were popular in your school, he is your guy. Elena and Alex’s bitter and sweet (but mostly sweet) relationship will make you remind of your irritating sibling.
5. Schneider -
Schneider is the rich landlord who owns the building in which the family lives, but more than that, he is Penelope’s irritating best friend. No matter what the Alvarez family says, he considers himself a part of the family and stands with them through thick and thin. He has had a troubled history, but the family keeps him grounded and makes him feel loved (though unwillingly, at times).
Bonus — he is hot. (Oops, shouldn’t have said that).
6. Dr. Leslie Berkowitz -
Leslie is the doctor Penelope works for. He is cute, clumsy, and will remind you of teddy bears. Insulted and exploited by his ex-wife and daughters, he finds solace in Lydia’s company and tries to woo her in vain, as Lydia is still in love with her dead husband that she gets visions of.
This show raises pertinent questions and tackles them too. Because giving spoilers and killing curiosity is against the policy of Fuzia (that clearly loves its audience), I have not mentioned specific things that you might have loved. But I know that telling about these kaleidoscopic characters is enough.
Oh, by the way, the show has won several awards and is the first show ever that has been revived by a traditional linear network after being cancelled by Netflix due to less number of viewers (imagine, it is that good).
P.S. — If you are a fan of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, you will get a pleasant surprise in one of the episodes. (Of course, I am not telling you what it is).
