We know that despite working the same amount and sometimes even more, on average a woman is paid less than a man in various organizations. In terms of dollars, women are paid 79 cents to a man’s 1 dollar. If you think gender is the only factor that affects equal pay, you’re wrong. The race also plays an important role. Studies show that women who are of color are paid less than their male counterparts.
As the years passed companies have become very transparent about their financials, and with the boom of the internet, women are now aware of this prevailing issue. Women now begin to realize their financial worth and have now begun to demand equal pay. A historic moment was when the U.S Women’s National football team demanded equal pay, which they were granted.
Some companies have also begun offering equal pay for equal work irrespective of gender, ethnicity, or sex. Many companies have openly offered equal pay to all while posting the job and job description.
Here is a list of 5 companies that offer equal pay:
1. Accenture- On their website Accenture has stated that by the year 2025 they are committed to achieving a 50–50 gender-balanced workforce. They also stated that by 2020 they wanted to have women in 25% of their managing director roles.
2. Apple- Apple has decided to not ask their candidates about their previous salary history, as a part of their commitment to achieving equal pay globally. According to their website, “We’ve achieved pay equity in every country where we operate-women earn the same as men when performing similar work. In the United States, underrepresented minorities earn one dollar for every dollar white employees earn. Every year, we examine the compensation employees receive and make adjustments to ensure that we maintain pay equity.” In 2019, Apple was ranked top in the technology industry in terms of equal pay.
3. Cisco- Cisco released a statement, which said that they will be testing for pay discrepancies regularly and stated that where they find gaps, they will go on to rectify it. Cisco was one of the 28 companies that signed an equal pay deal with the White House. They have made it clear Pay parity is an ongoing commitment for them.
4. IMB- IMB has always opted for performance-based appraisals, irrespective of gender, caste, and creed. They have gone on to enhance their policies for new hires, reiterating the value of each job, while taking into consideration the candidates’ prior experience and educational qualifications. According to them, this approach avoids focusing on current salary and salary history reducing potential pay inequalities.
5. Amazon- Under pressure from investors, amazon disclosed its policies on gender pay equality in 2016. This policy stated that women employees earned as much as their male counterparts. Amazon was one of the technology companies that came under question because of the male-domination of the tech sector. Amazon stated that women make up 39% of their global workforce. The company states that women in their company earn 99.9 cents to a dollar for every man.
These are some of the very few companies that acknowledge the work of women. And now with the spread of information, women are becoming more aware of their rights and their requirements. Although women entered the workplace at a later time than men they work as hard and sometimes twice as hard as men do. Therefore, women should be paid equally for their work. Gender should not play a role when it comes to work and occupation. We all should take a stand, and decide that that payment should be done on merit and worth of a candidate instead of the candidate’s gender. Many other companies have jumped on the equal pay wagon, and for that, we salute them.
