Let's Find Out What Makes it Awkward to Watch Sex on Television!

Let’s now talk about the taboo topic of sex. Sex is a part of our regular lives and it is a natural phenomenon that we know about. So why do you think we get awkward while watching sex scenes on screens? Nowadays with the new variety of content and its availability, intimate scenes, which include both sex and other forms of physical intimacy are frequently seen. Despite knowing all about it, we still get uncomfortable looking at naked bodies on screen, especially when we’re watching it with someone else!

So now let’s take a look at what makes it so awkward to watch a sex scene on a screen. When we were kids, our parents would cover our eyes when the two actors would kiss on screen. It was as though they were trying to shield us from something obscene. But, if you think about it, there is nothing obscene about kissing your loved one. We all have expressed affection to our partners and also seen our parents do the same.

From a young age, we were taught that public displays of affection or even sex scenes were something that we should not watch. But as you hit puberty, you too tend to learn things about your and sex. Now if you have parents who are understanding and open, they would take time out and explain things to you, they would explain the whole act of having sexual intercourse, without feeling ashamed about it. If they happen to make you feel comfortable with it. You, yourself are then intron going to be comfortable with it.

Movies come with age-appropriate ratings. These ratings ensure that no one below the appropriate age watches something they should not be exposed to. Not only that now shows on OTT platforms specify whether the content contains nude scenes. The warnings are clear and it is up to the parent to decide if their child should watch that form of content. With content now available the world over, each country is given the power to determine the age-appropriateness of the content. So, they themselves take a call on who should watch what.

But now that was in the era of the internet and with the boom of social media, we have easy access to ‘explicit’ content. The way we look at sex, and the way we comprehend sex is governed by the society we live in and the education we have been giving. The societal norms deem sex and sexual relationships, along with public displays of affection as inappropriate, so we then tend to look at sexual relationships as inappropriate. Even if they are seen on a screen!

We human beings are creatures who learn and adapt to taught behavior as our own. Which means, if our parents covered our eyes and ears while a sex scene was going on; we are going to do the same with our younger siblings or even our kids!

The filmmaker does not include scenes in a movie or a show that they don’t think is required. There is a reason why each scene is present, and censoring it out, takes away from the movie-watching experience as a whole.
To normalize watching a sex scene on a screen, we need to normalize the act of sex in the first place. Sex is a phenomenon that we all encounter at least once in our lives, so why make it awkward?

The next time you plan on watching a movie with someone, and a sex scene comes on, try not to shut your eyes, and try not to get awkward about it. When you change your perception, when you get rid of your prejudice it will allow you to help change someone else’s perspective!
