Met Gala: When celebrities sent out powerful statements through their outfits!
The Met Gala 2021 was the first after the arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic in the world. However, we are impressed by how certain celebrities did not shy away from giving a bold and meaningful message through their attire.
The Met Gala never disappoints- owing to this year’s theme of “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”, designers from various brands tried their hands on American fashion style and showcased their power-packed designs. While it’s all about who wore what in the most creative manner, it is also imperative to notice that most of these costumes are symbolic of strong messages that the world is eager to hear.
Let us take a look at some of the most powerful statements that celebrities showcased through their outfits this year!
1. Quannah Chasinghorse
An American model by profession, Quannah put out a very strong message through her overall look and her stunning attire- here she shows us how to reclaim the native American culture with her traditional yet modern choice and we must say, it is indeed the perfect example of combining the ‘yesterday and the today’ of the fashion industry.
2. Kendall Jenner
Supermodel Kendall is always awaited by the paparazzi to make an entry and we are glad that she did not disappoint! Her embellished see-through Givenchy gown is inspired by the legendary actress Audrey Hepburn’s iconic dress in ‘My Fair Lady’. With her look, Kendall pays a tribute to the modern outgoing woman who does not need a male chauffeur to make heads turn at an event like this. (And we loved it!)
3. Timothee Chalamet
The young actor wore a Haider Ackermann design, showcasing a futuristic young prince who is not bound by traditional ideas of royalty. We love how he paired his suit with white canvas sneakers instead of formal shoes- which portrays that it is okay to break the stereotypes and play by your own rules!
4. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez caught everyone’s attention at Met Gala this year by wearing a white off-shoulder evening gown with a bright red message in bold saying ‘Tax the Rich’. Her idea is to talk about having a fair tax code and support working families, especially those belonging to the middle class. This is a powerful message to eliminate the lines between the different classes of the society and is surely something needed to be pondered upon to ensure equality amongst all.
5. Karlie Kloss
Supermodel Karlie Kloss donned a Carolina Herrera dress- her red gown featured large ruffles over her shoulder and rose petal-like sleeves- symbolising a rose, the favourite American flower and how it has the power to make a statement with its strong colour and fragrance. Her look is a classic example of what we would call- ‘bold is beautiful’.
6. Billie Eilish
Pop sensation Billie made a grand debut by paying a tribute to the old Hollywood in her peach Oscar de la Renta gown. A vegan by choice, she made sure that her attire would be free of furs in any form and this impressed many animal-caring organisations and individuals who found this as a powerful message towards humanity.
7. Ella Emhoff
VP Kamala Harris’s stepdaughter Ella was indeed a pleasant surprise on the red carpet- she opted for a relaxed yet chic Stella McCartney for Adidas suit which showed her impeccable sense of style. She managed to hit the bull’s eyes by talking on behalf of Gen-Z who likes to be in comfort while also keeping their fashion game on point!
8. Lupita Nyong’o
Needless to say, Met Gala is a night of the best from the fashion industry from all across the world. However, there are very few costumes that manage to stick to the theme and give a powerful message to the audience through them. Lupita’s Versace denim gown shows the independent woman of America who knows how to have a balance in every aspect of her life and be successful in what she does. Brownie points for bringing denim into the limelight!
The Met Gala will also be looked forward to by artists and designers from all walks of life for the portrayal of the strong and bold statements that celebrities speak through their outfits. We can’t already wait for what they will offer in 2022!
