Orgasm Gap: Time to Understand the Myths, Causes, and the Ways to Close It
Good sexual experience combines two things- Mutual consent and Mutual Climax. However, only 7 percent achieve orgasm. The reason is due to the orgasm gap.
In 2019, the condom brand, Durex, released an ad showcasing the difference of sexual experience by both women and men. The ad introduced a mutual climax condom, showcasing the orgasm gap between couples.
When asked women of different sexual spectrums, straight women’s had higher instances of orgasm gap compared to queer women.
So what is an orgasm gap?
Just like the salary inequality exists in offices, orgasm inequality also exists in the bedroom. The orgasm gap is when women find it difficult to orgasm especially during coitus.
Sexologists also study the instances where heterosexual women are able to orgasm through masturbation but not with their partners.
Before we understand the causes of this phenomenon, let us take a look at the myths which widen this orgasm gap
1) Women achieve orgasm only through intercourse
This is a big myth as women experience multiple orgasms if they are aroused and their genitalia is explored beyond the vaginal orgasm
2) The female orgasm is a myth
When men ejaculate, the semen comes out. This is not the same case with women. Very few women discharges or squirts during vaginal orgasm; for many heterosexual males, female orgasm is a non-existent phenomenon.
3) Women who do not orgasm have a physical problem
Sexual pleasure is different for many women. Each woman takes time to orgasm in their own way. Many just enjoy the journey without achieving orgasm. Not achieving orgasm is not a sign of sexual or any physical ailment. Intimacy with the partner also has a huge role in achieving orgasms.
Causes of orgasm gap
1) Intimacy issues
The level of physical and emotional intimacy a woman has with her partners also becomes a cause for achieving orgasm. Both partners look at sex to build their emotional bond which makes the sexual act a safe space to achieve orgasm.
2) Lack of knowledge about the female genitalia
Men often lack knowledge about the female genitalia. The clitoris which when stimulated helps women to orgasm is often not explored by men. Men also do not explore sexual positions that can stimulate the g-spot for vaginal orgasm.
3) Lack of foreplay
As said before, women find it difficult to explore only through g-spot stimulation. During sex, foreplay plays a huge role to achieve orgasm. Exploring the erogenous zones especially the inner thighs and clitoris through oral sex. Mixing oral sex and intercourse in different positions during the whole act of coitus can help women to achieve orgasm.
4) Lack of arousal
Women’s genitalia also needs to be aroused before vaginal intercourse just like the penis. This arousal through touching and oral sex helps to lubricate the vaginal walls, reducing discomfort and increase the chances of vaginal orgasms.
How to bridge the gap?
The first step to bridge the orgasm gap is to prioritize female desires and debunk the myths around female orgasms. Clear-cut communications between partners can also help them to explore the body and your preferences during the act. Women should not feel shy and even guide their partners to discover their anatomy and be vocal about what they enjoy or find uncomfortable.
Sometimes sex does not need to end with orgasm, but at least the fun and the pleasure should be mutual.
