The creator of Harry Potter faced her own demons and only her determination and passion is the reason behind her success.

“By every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew.”, is one of JK Rowling’s most famous quotes. It’s hard to believe that one of the world’s most renowned authors was considered to be a failure, early in her career. One of the reasons why the Harry Potter creator is popular is her candidness. She has always been open and honest about her downfalls and struggles, which in turn makes her more relatable to her fans. She comes off as a regular human being, who fought her demons and made her way to the top. Inspiring us to do the same!

The writing was her passion and her solace. But creating a book series is no piece of cake. Her mother’s passing really put Rowling in a rut, and she stopped writing. Suffering from a great loss was not easy to deal with, so in hopes to get out of this very rut, she went on to take a job as an English teacher in Portugal for a year. This hampered her creative process and added a setback in her life.
Falling in love, and soon falling out of love left her with no job, and a child to raise. Now, this made her feel as though she finally hit rock bottom. She suffered from a bout of depression, living off of her menial unemployment income while raising a child. Being a single mother is not easy, especially if you didn’t have any financial support.
This was the time she went back to her passion, writing. For her, writing was a means of escape. Her life reached the places she feared, and after overcoming each hurdle, she had no fear anymore. For she knew she conquered her demons. So as her child slept, she found herself sitting in cafes writing her heart out.
Her fearlessness was seen in her characters, and after completing the first three chapters, she began to send her manuscripts around. But, the struggles were not over. Many publishers were not willing to take a risk on her, and one rejection led to another. Soon her mailbox was full of rejections.
But her bravery and boldness didn’t let rejection stop her. After sending it to 12 publishers who all rejected her ideas, the editor of Bloomsbury Publishing company sat down with her manuscript. Joining the editor, was her 8-year-old daughter. It was the little girl’s love for Harry and her keen interest to read the entire book that encouraged the publisher to go ahead with her book. However, Rowling was cautioned early, that she should get a day job as it was difficult to make money off of writing children’s books.

“Failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me.” — — J.K. Rowling
Can you believe that J.K. Rowling went from an unemployed single mother to one of the world’s most loved and cherished authors? The take back from her journey that we all should know is, failure and rejection are a part of every individual’s life. Rejection should not stop you from continuing on the journey, for you never know what is in store for you. She did not turn into an author overnight, but by facing all her trials and tribulations she came out triumphant. She has earned over $400 million in book sales and most of all, she has millions of adoring fans all over the world. Her books are translated in over 73 languages and she’s made over $20 billion through movie adaptations.

So, this should teach each one of us, to face every storm that life throws at us, head first. There is no demon too big to slay and there is no dream that is ever impossible. All you need to have is a lot of perseverance and a whole lot of passion.
