Hail, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. fans! Let us have a conversation today.
We all fell in love with Phoebe when she gave us a valid reason to escape from work — “I wish I could, but I don’t want to” — but who could have thought that the girl who didn’t even have a ‘pla’ would love rat babies and take care of them? Oh, because we are talking about babies already, how can anyone be this self-less to become a surrogate mother to their ‘newly-found’ half-brother’s triplets?! (I am crying thinking about the hospital scene where she huge the babies before they’re taken away from her. “My eyes, my eyes”)
No matter how ‘ditzy’ people say Phoebe is, she is hands down the kindest character I have ever seen portrayed on television. I might be taking a long shot, but even her signature song, “Smelly Cat”, speaks of kindness and compassion towards animals. I mean, come on -
What are they feeding you?
Smelly Cat, smelly cat
It’s not your fault.
It is not just about babies, rat babies, or the smelly cat; Phoebe is constantly seen doing things to comfort people and making them believe in good. I distinctly remember Phoebe trying to ‘cleanse’ Ross’ aura in the pilot episode after his wife left him to be with Susan, her girlfriend. Her character was pretty consistent throughout the series, always caring for people — whether it be her friends or her love interests. Phoebe even married a man, who happened to be gay, just so that he could have his green card. She is a superwoman indeed!
Yes, I agree that Phoebe screams and can be difficult to be with at times, but it is just another side of her caring nature. Oh, even her job helps people relax — she is a professional masseuse! Phoebe is that rock to her friends that helps them stay grounded. She is always available with her uniquely whimsical ways for everyone and never shies away from helping those in need. This dramatic sidekick is the most nuanced character on the show. She will resolve fights; she will take care of kids; she will even love cats like she would love her mother! Phoebe is intelligent, very intelligent; but she never uses her intelligence and her convincing power to manipulate people — she uses them to help others. Oh, how my heart wells up thinking of her beautiful character.
Phoebe is the only character who knows how it is to not have any emotional security — her mother, who she later realizes was not her birth-mother, commits suicide, her father abandons her, her step-father is in jail, her sibling refuses to acknowledge her relationship with her, and she spent her Sweet Sixteen “being chased round a tire yard by an escaped mental patient who, in his own words, wanted to ‘kill me’ or whatever”, but she is also the most humanitarian of all. Maybe that is why there is just one Phoebe and is always going to be. And that is why I said what I said — “we need more Phoebe Buffays in the world”. We need more Phoebes to cleanse auras and pass warm smiles on the road; we need more Phoebes to stand up to bad people and work for a good cause; we need more Phoebes to tell all the Mikes, Monicas, Chandlers, Rosses, Joeys, and Rachels how to live!
Okay, we have had enough nostalgia for today. So, as Pheebs would say, “Pick up the sock”, and maybe read a few other blogs or watch another show.
