For the last two years, millennial is trending and so is a boomer. Let us finally address the talk of the town; the great millennial Vs boomer debate.

For some, it is a trend that ruled social media for long and for some it can mean office nightmare. Let us first know what millennials and boomers mean.

Millennials aka Gen Y are those who were born in the 1980s,1990s, or early 2000s. They have grown up with the internet and can’t imagine a world without it.

Baby Boomers aka boomers technically refer to those who were born during a ‘baby boom’ (especially in the U.S post World War 2). In recent times, the term boomer came into use as slang among the young cohorts who find anyone’s ideas flat, outdated and inflexible.

The phrase “Ok, boomer” memes has gone viral and global. It is supposed to convey a dissociation between the two groups. It carries a dismissive connotation with it, as in, “Ok, whatever you say”!

Be it your dinner table politics debate, your society meeting or your workspace, the cross-generational clash is a veteran one. There is a yawning difference between the two ideologies.

A millennial think, “Ok Boomer” to herself/ himself when colleagues don’t understand the concept of fluid gender identity. If someone came to you and had said something like, “There are only two genders”, I am sure your reaction would be in essence “Ok Boomer”.

At workspaces, the older generations find it difficult to figure out how to keep a tab on the changing times and how to walk along with the new leaders. The same goes for the “millennials” who pose new challenges with their ever-changing technology and time. It is crucial that people from both the category lower down their egos and give chance to new and fresh ideas. Unless there are mutual respect and understanding there will be this disconnect.

Strangely enough, the meme ‘Ok boomer’ has been in use to denote anyone who is older and in a position of power, even if they aren’t outdated. While in the case of millennials, anyone who is younger is a millennial, again, even if they are not.

So, the boomer vs millennial debate has been recurring. The millennials believe that the older generations aren’t flexible to bend their rules to welcome newness and change. They believe that years of misunderstanding and condescension have brought this terse rejection.

The boomer Vs millennial debate is basically a miniature of probable reflection of what most of us had faced whenever there was a clash of opinions between us and our parents or grandparents. Lucky are those who are blessed to have parents who did try to understand and vice-versa. The crux is that it’s not ok to “OK Boomer”. We shall walk together and make them understand with persistent efforts.

The generational conflict is nothing new but it is important that the different generations come together and communicate better. It is better that we meet in the middle, isn’t it?

Do let us know your “boomer/ millennial” moments in the comment section below.
