It’s important to be aware of what sexual health really means. Now that people are actively being intimate with their partners, it’s’ important to know the facts first.

Health. The first thought we associate with the word health is maybe physical wellbeing. Now, in recent times, we have begun associating mental wellbeing with the word as well. As times are now progressing, so is our notion of health. Health doesn’t have a singular association anymore. When we think of health now, the three big topics associated with health are Physical, Psychological (mental), and sexual health.

We no longer live in an uber-conservative society where talking about sexual health and wellbeing is considered to be a taboo. Although having a sexual relationship before marriage is still looked down upon, many young men and womxn of today are actively participating in these kinds of relationships. So, isn’t it better to talk about how to have a sexy health life and spread awareness before it’s too late?
The modern-day individual knows that sex is more than a mere act of physical relationships but also a way of being intimate with one’s partner. But, as gender norms and the types of relationships keep changing, and evolving so do sexual relationships. People are now openly experimenting with their sexuality, so it’s important to know all about it before you do it.

Sexual health is more than reproductive health. Sexual health is about embracing your sexuality and enjoying it throughout your life. This adds up to be an important part of your physical and emotional wellbeing. It also has to do a lot with participating in healthy intercourse, to ensure that neither one of the two parties are physically or emotionally hurt. It’s important to stay safe.

So, to sum it up in a couple of points sexual health is:
• Understanding your sexuality, embracing it, and understanding it’s a natural part of life.
• Recognising and respecting all of our sexual rights
• Trying to prevent the spread of STD’s.
• Seeking the right treatment if one has acquired a disease.
• Making an effort to prevent unwanted pregnancy.
• The ability to experience sexual pleasure, intimacy, and satisfaction when you desire.
• The ability to have an open and honest conversation about sexual health with your partner or other health caregivers.

Sexuality is an integral part of everyone’s life. Love and intimacy is an important part of a healthy relationship. Along with the two positives of sexual health, there are illnesses, mixed emotions, and consequences that can affect any relationship, therefore it’s important to talk about it.

So next time when someone mentions the words, ‘Sexual Health’ don’t let your mind jump directly to thoughts of STDs and unwanted pregnancy. So, to make sure that doesn’t happen anymore, it’s important to educate yourself, and have open conversations with your partner(s). If one is completely aware of themselves, their sexuality, and their sexual right, it helps an individual feel in charge of their life.

There is nothing to be ashamed of. Speaking up about what you like and what you dislike is important. Especially now that relationships move at a faster pace than before. You should not have to hide who you are. So be open with your partner. Discuss this matter before you start having an active sexual life. Communication is an important part of a relationship, so make sure you communicate freely without a single fear in your mind.

It’s important for womxn in a relationship to now speak about their sexuality and sexual needs with their respective partner(s). It then reinforces the fact that there are two people in the relationship. And both your needs are important. So be sure to speak up. It will also give you a sense of control and power. You no longer have to go with everything that comes your way. Accept who you are and what you like, but also make sure you own it. because there’s nothing to be ashamed about!
