Wrestler Priya Malik Wins Gold Medal for India at World Cadet Wrestling Championship
Indian Wrestler, Priya Malik, clinched gold at the World Cadet Championship on Sunday, 25th of July, in Hungary. She defeated Kseniya Patapovich, 5–0, in the summit clash and won the gold medal. Malik won in the women’s 73 kg category.
Indian women are making the country proud with their achievements. Just when the country was gleaming with weightlifter Mirabai Chanu’s silver at the Tokyo Olympics, wrestler Priya Malik clinched gold at the World Cadet Wrestling Championship. As per reports from ANI, Priya Malik had beaten Belarus’ Kseniya Patapovich with 5–0 in the summit clash and had claimed the gold medal in the 73 kg category. With her big win, Priya Malik also becomes the first athlete to bag a gold medal for the country in the World Wrestling Championship.
Malik has an exemplary track record of bagging golds at championships of all levels. The wrestler hails from the northern city of Jind, Haryana. She is a student of Choudhary Bharat Singh Memorial School. Her father, Jayabhagwan Nidani, is an Indian army veteran.
Priya Malik’s big win is a succession of her exceptional performances throughout her career. She had won the gold medal in the Khelo India 2019 edition held in Pune. In the very same year, she clinched another gold at the 17th School Games that were conducted in New Delhi. Apart from these wins, Malik also bagged two more gold medals the following year in 2020.
Her achievements were further succeeded by two following gold medal triumphs. Malik bagged a gold at the National Cadet Championship in Patna and won another gold at the National School Games.
Several eminent personalities including Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated all the champions of the 2021 World Cadet Wrestling Championships. “Our sports persons continue to make us proud. India wins 13 medals, including 5 Golds at the World Cadet Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Congratulations to our team and best wishes for their future endeavours,” tweeted PM Modi. Lok Sabha speaker, Om Birla, also congratulated the grappler and termed it another elating moment after Mirabai Chanu won a Silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics.
Meanwhile, many people including prominent entertainment personalities like Milind Soman were of the misinformed opinion that Malik won a gold at the Tokyo Olympics. The model-actor even got trolled on Twitter for his misinformed tweet. However, Soman corrected himself in a separate tweet accepting his lack of fact-checking. Indian Cricketer, Ishant Sharma, made the same mistake earlier that day while congratulating Priya Malik for winning a gold at the Tokyo Olympics. Before the paceman could take down his tweet, the screenshot of the same had already gone viral to frown upon his misinformed tweet.
It is a proud moment for the country to witness our sports persons winning golds at global championships. We would reinforce the message that women can achieve anything they set their eyes on, even if that’s an endurance task!
